What’s the buzz about coconut oil for dogs?

Dogs can definitely benefit from coconut oil. Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is a great immune builder. Coconut oil can be classified as a ‘superfood’. It can not only improve your dog’s skin and coat, but it can speed healing, reduce allergic reactions, and improve digestion.

Topically, coconut oil can have a beneficial effect on your dog’s skin and coat. A coconut oil treatment once weekly will not only leave your dog’s skin soft, but will improve the health of skin and nails.  Apply a light layer to the skin and let it absorb for about 5 minutes then rinse with water.  If you feel that the skin is still oily, you can apply a light shampoo and rinse again.

Orally, it can have the same benefit as well.  Using 1/4 teaspoon daily for every 10 pounds of weight is a great place to start.  This may take some time for your dog to adjust to and if they experience loose or greasy stools, decrease the dosage. The maximum dosage should be 1 teaspoonful daily for every 10 pounds of body weight.

Are all coconut oils the same? Absolutely not! Choose an unrefined or virgin coconut oil with a cold-pressed oil being the ideal first choice.  Will your dog gobble this down? Hard to say.  Each coconut oil has a different scent and flavor so you may have to try a different option that will appeal to your pet.
